North Carolina Lottery: The Year In Review

RALEIGH -  Celebrating it's one year anniversary on March 30th, the NC Lottery has released some facts and figures about its operations for the past year.

One interesting facet of the statistics is that Wake County plays a prominent role in the lottery. Wake County has consistently been ranked as selling the most lottery tickets, having the highest grossing retailer, and also has the most retailers of any county.

Amount Raised

The NC Lottery has transferred over $220 million to the State Education Lottery Fund for sales through Dec. 31, 2006 and another transfer will be made in April.

Player Statistics

§         The NCEL has paid prizes to players in all 100 counties

§         The largest prize won in NC to date is $74.5 million on Powerball. Halifax County native Jackie Alston chose to take the lump sum payment of $36.5 million.

§         Largest "Carolina Cash 5" prize so far was $731,836, which was won by John Eagles of Southport. 

§         There are 1,244 players that have won $1,000 or more as of March 8, 2007

§         There are eleven players that have had multiple wins of $1,000 or more

§         Carolina Cash 5 introduced Oct. 27

§         Biggest Powerball sales day in NC was Jan. 24, 2007 with $4,402, 278 in sales

§         Highest Powerball jackpot since NCEL joined the game was $254 million

§         Powerball held a drawing live in Durham Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006
