::Durham Police Seize 43 Lbs. Of Marijuana

DURHAM - According to the Durham Police Department, the police squad known as ICE (Interstate Criminal Enforcement) seized a total of 43 pounds of marijuana during two traffic stops last week.

Police say that ICE Corporal R.E. Gaddy Jr. stopped a 2007 Chrysler on Interstate 85 near Hillandale Road at around 10pm on Tuesday March 27th.  After a search, officers say they found 30 pounds of marijuana, worth approximately $30,000, in a suitcase in the back seat of the Chrysler.

Durham Police say that the driver, Toran L. Shamberger, age 30, of Britton Street in Greensboro, was charged with trafficking marijuana by transportation, trafficking marijuana by possession, possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, maintaining a vehicle to transport drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $50,000, says the department.

In a separate unrelated incident, Durham Police say that ICE Officer J.J. McDonough stopped a Nissan Xterra on Interstate 85 near Avondale Drive at 1pm on Thursday March 29th. Police say that officers on the scene found 13 pounds of marijuana, worth approximately $13,000, hidden under a coat in the rear cargo area.

Officers charged Federico P. Montes, age 54, also of Greensboro with two counts of trafficking in marijuana and one count of possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver. According to police, bond for Montes was set at $100,000.

In 2006, Durham Police say that their ICE officers conducted 3,892 traffic stops and searched 1,671 vehicles. They seized 14 weapons, 13 vehicles and more than $226,000 in cash. They also confiscated more than $500,000 worth of cocaine and $116,000 worth of marijuana. In addition, the department says tht ICE officers wrote more than 650 tickets and made 20 DWI arrests during last year. ::
