RALEIGH - Raleigh Police say that two homicides where women were the victims took place on the same day in Raleigh, although the two crimes are not related.

Police say that a shooting on Green Road on Tuesday evening left a 13 year old dead and her mother injured.  Earlier that day, another woman was stabbed to death and police had to chase the suspect on both foot and in a car before catching him.

According to Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue, the first murder took place on Green Road.

Police say, at around 9pm Tuesday night, Raleigh officers responded to a shooting call at 4401-101 Green Rd. Upon arrival, the
officers located two gunshot victims inside the apartment.

Gelnirys Ortega, age 13,  was declared deceased at the scene. The victim's mother, Milagros Ortega, age 32, was taken to WakeMed for treatment since she had also been shot. Police say that both Ortega and her daughter lived at the apartment.

Police did not name a possible suspect in the case, but it seems from further actions that they most likely have someone in mind.

Although not charged directly with the muder, Raleigh Police said they arrested Wilson Batista Roldao, Jr., age 18, and have charged him with one count of accessory after the fact of murder in connection with the death of Gelnirys Ortega.

Raleigh Police did say that they thought the main suspect or suspects knew their victims.

"While it is not possible to provide additional specifics about the homicide and shooting cases at this point, it can be said that the
investigation has established that they stemmed from circumstances that
did not involve random contacts involving strangers," said Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

The case is still under investigation, say police.

Second Homicide

Shortly after 5am on Tuesday, Raleigh Police Department officers say they responded to 1311-G Kent Rd. When they arrvied, police say that the officers located a 29-year-old woman who had apparently died of stab wounds.

Police say that the victim of the homicide was Lorrielle Watkins, age 29.

According to Jim Sughrue, the Raleigh Police spokesman, a suspect has been arrested in the case and police say that  Mwanza Rama Bennett, age 25, was charged with murder.

The Raleigh Police say that the suspect was still in the vicinity of the crime scene as Raleigh Police Department officers arrived.

Sughrue said that officers chased the suspect on foot but that he reached his vehicle and fled the scene.

"A vehicle pursuit was initiated and continued to a location on Tryon Road near Par Drive, where the suspect lost control of his vehicle, was involved in a one-car wreck,
and was taken into custody," said Sughrue in a released statement.

On Tuesday, police said a warrant has been signed charging the suspect with murder, and he was going to be transported to the Wake County Jail at the conclusion of the interview process.

Sughrue said the the suspect and the victim knew each other.

"The crime was not a random act," said Sughrue.  "The victim and the suspect were well known to one another."  ::
