::NCSU To Start 1,000 Mile Bus Tour

From Raleigh Chronicle Staff & Wire Reports
Thursday May 10, 2007

RALEIGH - One day after the North Carolina State University graduation, university officials and students are embarking upon a 1,000 mile bus tour throughout the state of North Carolina on Monday morning.

The 32 county tour is designed to connect the public university with North Carolina citizens and business across the state.

According to the school, thirty-five faculty members, students, and administrators from North Carolina State University will ride together for the 11th annual statewide bus tour.

"The students and faculty will tour businesses and industries important to the state's economy and will learn more about the state from her citizens, business and community leaders," said the university in a released statement.  "The program's goal is to show NC State University faculty and staff how their classroom and outreach activities continue to serve the state reflective of the role of a land grant university."  They also will look for further opportunities to apply NC State research in impacting the overall quality of life.

For five days, the "Connecting in North Carolina" tour will visit some of the hometowns of our students.  The school says those visits allow faculty and staff to understand where the students arrive from as they enter NC State and return to after completion of their formal academic requirements.

The tour will visit a wide variety of schools, businesses, farms, and other locations throughout the state including SAS Institute in Cary, Old Salem, a working farm in Bunn, Southern Middle School in Graham, Wake Forest University labs in Winston-Salem,  Haldex Hydraulics of Statesville, American & Efird textile mill of Mt. Holly, Bolt Design Group in Charlotte, Jordan Lumber Company in Mt. Gilead, the NC Zoo in Asheboro, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, the Vernon James Research Center in Plymouth, the Somerset Plantation Historic Site in Creswell, Perquimans Central School in Winfall, and the Chowan County Cooperative Extension.  ::
