CARY - A Cary high school sent a note home to parents on Tuesday saying that rumors that a student was going to bring a gun to school were "no credible threat."
Panther Creek High School, which is located on McCrimmon Parkway in Cary, sent the note home with all students on Tuesday afternoon.
Principal Rodney C. Nelson said in the note to parents that the "school administration had been contacted by parents who have expressed concern about rumors they have heard of a person who allegedly planned to come onto school campus with a weapon."
According to one student -- although this information was not included in the note to parents -- the rumors got started when there was a recent fight in the lunchroom between two students, where one student got a bloody wound near his eye. The high school student said that it was rumored that one of the students in a the fight was going to return to the school with a gun.
However, in the letter school officials say that the rumors were investigated by the Cary Police and were found not to be true.
"School administrators have worked with Cary Police and WCPSS Security staff to investigate these rumors," said Principal Nelson in the letter. "Based on these rumors and their investigation, the Cary Police, who dealt directly with the source of these rumors, found no credible threat against Panther Creek High School."
The principal added that they took the rumors of a potential threat seriously, especially with recent actions of violence on school campuses.
"In light of recent events, we understand the heightened level of concern that people have about the security of school campuses," Principal Nelson added. "Please be assured that our school administration is working closely with...Cary Police to address even rumors associated with our school. Safety is our priority."
However, on Wednesday, at least one student said there was another rumor of a possible bomb threat by a student and the school administration was notified of that rumor as well. ::
