::Sen. Dole Opposes Immigration Bill

From Raleigh Chronicle Staff And Wire Reports
Tuesday, May 22, 2007

WASHINGTON DC - North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole (R) has announced that she is opposed to the proposed comprehensive immigration reform bill that is being introduced in the US Senate.

"While I recognize that immigration reform is urgently needed, based on what I've learned so far, I would oppose this proposal unless it is radically altered," said Dole in a statement to the media.

Dole also said that she was concerned about several provisions in the bill

A press statement said that Dole is concerned that "illegal immigrants could receive a special visa that could be renewed indefinitely, Social Security benefits could be obtained on the basis of an expired Social Security number (as a result of overstaying a visa); and the so-called 'triggers' would not sufficiently secure the border."

The controversial bill has supporters and detractors in both parties.  Although Senators Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) and John McCain (R-Ariz) have both stated they jointly support the bill, others have said they oppose the bill due to its "amnesty" provisions.

Others say the bill puts too much of a burden on employers and American citizens, who would have to call in every time a job is applied for to verify that they are a citizen and wait up to 10 days to receive verification.

An article in the New York Times on Sunday stated that such an employment database had been tried before on a test basis, but was rife with errors.  A new database would have to be robust enough to work for 145 million American workers, something that some say is impossible. ::
