RALEIGH, -- Around 49 AmeriCorps members from North Carolina are helping with the AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon in Gulfport, Mississippi this week, says the NC Governor's office.  Gulfport was one of the hardest hit areas during the Katrina disaster.

AmeriCorps members from 25 states and the District of Columbia have been building as many as twenty houses in Gulfport this week.

The AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon is an annual event in which Habitat for Humanity staff and AmeriCorps members working for Habitat for Humanity affiliates build homes in needed areas and this year Gulfport was chosen because of its devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

Members and volunteers will stay at five volunteer camps in and around Gulfport .  In total, more than 60 North Carolina AmeriCorps members, state and county Habitat for Humanity program staff, and AmeriCorps alumni will participate in the Build-a-Thon.

Habitat for Humanity is one of 11 AmeriCorps programs funded by the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, housed in the Office of the Governor.

"AmeriCorps members work hard every day to improve the lives of North Carolinians ," said NC Governor Mike Easley.  "This year's Build-a-Thon gives them the opportunity to expand their service beyond the borders of our state to reach others needing assistance."

AmeriCorps members serving with Habitat for Humanity help build affordable housing through their service as construction crew leaders, volunteer coordinators and family service assistants.  Most members serve on the construction site leading and training community volunteers in the building of Habitat homes, enabling the local Habitat affiliate to use community volunteers more effectively and in great numbers.

AmeriCorps is a national service initiative designed to increase volunteering and civic engagement in America .  AmeriCorps members serve in 54 counties across the state.  Since 1994, more than 3,900 individuals have participated in N.C. AmeriCorps programs, says a statement from the Governor's Office.
