DURHAM -- According to Durham Police, investigators have arrested two men and charged them with stealing copper and traffic signal lights from a construction site.
Police say that the white Ford pickup truck with the duct-taped window was located Thursday in the parking lot of the Scottish Inn on U.S. 70 in Orange County.
Travis Richard Byrd, age 54, of Purvis Road and Tracy Steele Jones, age 46, of U.S. 70 West were arrested and charged with felony larceny in connection with a May 12th copper theft that took place at a construction site near Cole Mill Road and Interstate 85.
Police say that the men allegedly stole copper wire and signal lights worth several thousand dollars from the site.
The suspects were evidently caught on camera, as the department released photos of the crime in action, as items were loaded into the pickup truck (see right).
Durham Police have investigated numerous thefts in recent weeks of metal objects such as copper, drainage grates and manhole covers.
According to one business owner in downtown Durham, last year thieves took several tons of metal building parts that were stolen in broad daylight about two blocks from the Durham Police station. ::
