::Red Hat's Bob Young Gets Into Real Estate

From Raleigh Chronicle Staff & Wire Reports
Friday June 8, 2007

RALEIGH - According to an article in the News & Observer newspaper, Bob Young, the founder of the large Red Hat software firm, has branched off into real estate development with his purchase of a landmark building on Hillsborugh Street in Raleigh.

The newspaper reports that Young bought for $3.5 million the well-known "bulldozer" building that was occupied by the North Carolina Equipment Company for many years.  The giant yellow bulldozer sign at the top of the building is a local landmark.

Although Young told the News & Observer that he was a big fan of light industrial spaces, there seemed to be no decision yet on whether the building will be torn down and a new development built from scratch or whether the building will be kept and renovated.

Young did tell the newspaper that with its proximity to NC State University, he may consider using the property as a high tech business incubator.  Reportedly, Young lives in downtown Raleigh not far from the property.

Bob Young is well-known in technology circles as the founder of Red Hat, which distributes and manages Linux operating system platforms around the world.  The company went public during the Dot Com era making Young and Red Hat one of few major "home-grown" tech successes in the Triangle.  The publicly traded Red Hat is headquartered in Raleigh on NC State's Centennial Campus.

Currently, Young runs Lulu.com, which offers online self-publishing help for book authors and now has even branched into videos and music.  That company continues to grow in offices in Morrisville.  Young's wife runs Needlepoint.com which is located in Raleigh in Cameron Village, according to the News & Observer. ::
