RALEIGH - Some new valet parking zones have opened up in downtown Raleigh, allowing patrons of restaurants and bars to pull up even closer to entertainment areas without having to worry about parking.
The valet loading zones, which have been started in the last month or so, are in operation on Friday and Saturday nights from 5:30pm to 3am.
As pointed out by new city signs, those areas are not allowed to be parked in during those times except by those using the valet services.
The valet service is free for drivers, although usually some sort of gratuity is expected to be given to the parking attendants.
At one valet parking zone on Blount Street next to Moore Square which has restaurants and venues such as the Duck & Dumpling and the PourHouse, TirNaNog Irish Pub manager Annie Nice said the valet parking has a safety benefit which was especially great for women since they didn't have to walk in the dark at night from a parking lot.
Security in downtown parking areas has been a big issue since a Progress Energy worker was kidnapped and killed after she was abducted from a downtown Raleigh parking lot last year.
Those wishing to take advantage of the valet parking should look for the red-shirted Parking Solutions workers who are manning the stand at the valet location. Cars are parked in a nearby parking deck and then retrieved when the patron returns. ::
