::More Upscale Hotels On Raleigh's Horizon

By Elliott West, Raleigh Chronicle News Editor

Wednesday June 13, 2007

RALEIGH - As this newspaper has reported, upscale hotels such as the Umstead in Cary have recently opened and the Lafayette Hotel by Empire Properties is planned for downtown Raleigh, but even more high quality hotels are on the horizon for the Raleigh market.

One of the more recent projects to begin is a new Renaissance Hotel in the North Hills Mall shopping center off of Six Forks Road in Raleigh next to the Target store.  North Hills is an upscale mall that features an REI store, movie theater, and dozens of clothing stores and restaurants.

Somewhat delayed in the start on construction, work began in earnest recently with rebar and concrete work clearly visible.

There was some conjecture because of the delay that Renaissance Hotels had pulled out, but a sign there clearly says that it is going to be a Renaissance Hotel.

The Renaissance chain is owned by Marriott and is slated to be a four star facility.

According to the Raleighing.com site, the facility was originally planned to be a 240 room hotel, but was slimmed down to 229 rooms in its final design.

Other Hotel Changes

According to a hotel executive in the area, construction of the new AmeriSuites at the intersection of Wake Forest Road and Navaho Drive in Raleigh is "95% complete."

That same source said that both the Wake Forest Road AmeriSuites and the one at the RDU airport-Morrisville location will be both converted to Hyatt Place Hotels by November.  Aimed at the upscale business traveler, the converted Hyatt Place Hotels will include free wireness Internet, breakfast, rooms with a modern design, flat screen TV's, and more.

In addition, the hotel executive stated that the Winston Hotels group is building one of its new "Aloft" hotels across from the Hilton Garden Inn at the RDU Center on Aviation Parkway.  Similar in modern appeal to the Hyatt Place Hotels, the Aloft Hotels will have loft rooms with oversized showers, flat-panel TV's, and plug and play connectivity for electronic devices.

There is also a new Hampton Inn and Suites opening soon just behind the Brier Creek Shopping Center. It is located behind Dick's Sporting Goods right at the intersection of Interstate 540 and Highway 70 just down the road from the Angus Barn restaurant.

In addition, a new Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites is almost finished near the RDU airport
across from the Factory Outlet Mall on Airport Boulevard next door to Hooters Restaurant.
