RALEIGH - The Raleigh Police Department today confirmed the cause of death and also the recovery of a knife in the murder of Jennifer Nielsen, a pregnant newspaper carrier in Raleigh on June 14th (see main story).
"The Raleigh Police Department is in a position to confirm that Jennifer Kathleen Nielson was stabbed," said Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue in a release to the news media earlier today. "The autopsy will provide additional details when it is completed and released by the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner."
In addition, the police confirmed earlier reports that a knife had been found near the scene of the crime.
"As is typical with any major investigation, a large number of items have been collected, and the department is in a position to confirm that one of the collected items in this case was a knife that was located in an area near the crime scene," confirmed Sughrue.
"The knife and other items of potential evidence are being examined in an appropriate manner."
Sughrue cautioned the media in respect to the knife, saying it was not determined yet that the knife was the actual murder weapon.
According to a report televised on WRAL-TV on June 19th, a man found a "bloody knife" alongside of the road and threw it over a fence when he saw that it had blood on it.
According to the report, the man later went and told police about the weapon.
A police officer with the Raleigh Police Department told the Raleigh Chronicle last week that the knife was found the same day of the murder.
The case has received national attention, especially after the victim's employer, the USAToday newspaper, ran a full page advertisement in the Money section of Monday's edition asking for clues in the crime.
The Raleigh Police have set up a special phone number for tips in the case at 919-227-6220. ::
