::Seaboard Station Expanding Rapidly

RALEIGH - Seaboard Station, the former railway station turned shopping center in downtown Raleigh, has grown rapidly in recent months with the opening of several new stores and businesses including two new restaurants, a hardware store, a fitness facility, and more on the way.

The shopping center is located near the intersection of Peace Street and Capital Boulevard, tucked away behind Halifax Street between Capital and Peace College's campus.  [see map].

The old section of the Seaboard Station center has been a draw for many years.

The Logan Trading Company, which is housed in the old Seaboard Train Station, is well known for selling outdoor lawn and patio decorations and supplies and Seaboard Wine Warehouse has been in its space for several years.

However, new development of the rest of the complex with uniquely styled architecture has proved a draw for new businesses.

Other stores such as Galatea clothing have opened up in the past year. In addition, the popular restaurant Seaboard 18 has been a hit with dining patrons since it opened last year.

In recent months, a new restaurant and bar with European fare known as J.Betski's has opened in Seaboard.  In addition, a new ACE Hardware store opened in the shopping center earlier this year.

Next to the ACE Hardware Store is a new fitness center that just opened last week called Seaboard Fitness & Wellness.

The expansive fitness center features flat panel televisions, a nutrition bar, an indoor cycle room, steam room and showers, fitness studios and more.

The upscale facility also features a unique modern design that impresses guests with a large fishtank and high ceilings when entering.

Other stores are on the way.  Slated to open in September next to the fitness center is a new Chinese restaurant called Peace China.

In addition, the front section of the shopping center is going to be home to a new restaurant called Tookie's Grill and will be located next to the Flander's Art Gallery.

One of the biggest openings in the center will be the re-opening of one of the downtown area's few grocery stores, the Capital City Grocery.  The grocery is scheduled to open under new ownership later this month with a newly upfitted store, coffee bar, salad bar, sushi bar, and more.

The store has delayed its opening by about a month, but many hope to see it succeed because of its downtown location and local ownership.

Although passenger service at the Seaboard Station is a thing of the past, the district still has connections to the railroad industry.  At the end of the shopping center, CSX and other railroads have multiple line switching yards that are still used by freight lines.

In addition, as a reminder of the golden age of railroad, a Pullman luxury passenger car from the early 20th century is stored on a rail line within sight of all the shops.    [see story].  ::
