::Wake Co. Schools Most Violent In NC

From Raleigh Chronicle Staff Reports
Thursday, July 12, 2007

RALEIGH - As new residents in Wake County register their kids to attend school in the fall, many may not be aware of the level of crime on campuses across the county.

According to the latest figures available from the NC Department of Public Instruction and State Board of Education which are from the 2005 - 2006 school year, Wake County schools reported the most serious crime incidents of any school district in North Carolina.  Figures for the 2006 - 2007 school year will likely be released in December.

In those reports, Wake County led the entire state in number of serious crime reports on school campuses with 1,159 incidents while Mecklenburg County reported 820.

Other counties in the top five included Cumberland County with 625, Guilford County with 563, and Forsyth County with 415 reports.

The incidents did not include simple assault or other minor crimes such as vandalism, but included several major crimes including the following:
--Assault involving use of a weapon
--Assault on school personnel
--Assault resulting in serious injury
--Possession of alcoholic beverage
--Possession of controlled substance
--Possession of firearm
--Possession of a weapon
--Rape
--Sexual Offense
--Death by other than natural causes
--Kidnapping
--Robbery without a dangerous weapon
--Robbery with a dangerous weapon
--Bomb Threat
--Burning of school building

The number of crimes in Wake County varied widely with each school.  While some schools in Wake reported zero crimes, others such as Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh reported 53.

Elementary schools obviously reported a lower number of crimes than high schools, where some such as Sanderson High School reported the highest at 63 such incidents.
