RALEIGH - In a city that has welcomed Kid Rock as a frequent visitor, the Raleigh Police Department announced today that they arrested Matthew L. Shafer. Shafer is also known as entertainer "Uncle Kracker" who initially gained fame as a DJ for well-known recording artist Kid Rock.
According to Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue, Shafer was arrested and charged with second degree forcible sex offense.
The arrest arose after an incident last night at the Ess Lounge, a downtown nightclub located at 327 W. Davie Street in the warehouse district of Raleigh. The large somewhat upscale lounge is across from Nana's Chophouse and is near the White Collar Crime nightclub.
According to police, a woman at the lounge approached an off-duty officer who was working at Ess. Many bars and nightclubs in downtown Raleigh hire off-duty Raleigh police officers who work in their official uniform to provide security.
Police say that the woman told the officer that she was allegedly accosted by Shafer.
"A 26 year old female patron approached the officer and reported that a suspect had committed a sexual act against her while she was inside the establishment," said Sughrue in a police statement.
Police did not elaborate on the alleged sexual act and did not release the name of his victim.
However, Raleigh Police did say that the woman and Shafer were "not acquaintances."
Shafer was not immediately detained at the Ess Lounge, but was arrested earlier today in Cary.
"After subsequent investigation by the off-duty officer and by other members of the department, a warrant was obtained charging Matthew L. Shafer with second degree forcible sex offense," said Sughrue.
Shafer was staying at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Harrison Avenue in Cary next to Interstate 40.
Sughrue said that Cary Police officers "located and detained" Shafer at the hotel until Raleigh Police could arrive to serve the arrest warrant. At that point he was taken to the Wake County Jail in downtown Raleigh, said police, where he was placed under a $5 million bond.
An address was not provided by the police for Shafer's residence. According to one media report Shafer lives in Nashville, but that has not been confirmed.
Shafer is well-known for being a former disc jockey for Kid Rock, a rock and roll star. Kid Rock frequents Raleigh especially during the hockey season when he attends the Carolina Hurricanes games at the RBC Center. Kid Rock has also gone out quite a bit in the downtown area. Once at Sullivan's Steakhouse on Glenwood Avenue, he bought
some high school students dinner for their prom night.
In addition to his DJ fame, Shafer is known for his duet with famous country music star Kenny Chesney called "When the Sun Goes Down" and other Top 40 hits. ::
